A Family Road Trip Through Austin and San Antonio in 4 Days

A family road trip had been on our minds for a while. So when our kids had a short break from school in early October and my husband could take a few days off, it felt like the perfect moment. Meanwhile, we were eager to explore more of our new home state—Texas.

We planned a 4-day, 3-night getaway with two iconic destinations: Austin and San Antonio. Austin was conveniently on the way, and San Antonio was the real highlight we were looking forward to.

Travel Prep and the Drive from Fort Worth

Before hitting the road, I packed everything to make our family road trip smooth: plenty of snacks, cold water bottles, cozy pillows, devices loaded with movies for the kids, and a fun playlist for the whole ride.

From Fort Worth to Austin it’s about 3.5 hours by car. The trip was smooth, however, as we approached Austin, traffic picked up. Meanwhile, we made a delicious stop in Round Rock at a Brazilian restaurant called TorresBee, where we enjoyed feijoada and caipirinhas. It gave our trip a cozy start that reminded us of home.

In addition, this stop gave everyone a little rest before diving into Austin.

Family Road Trip Stop 1: Exploring Austin’s Energy

We stayed at TownePlace Suites by Marriott, about 30 minutes from downtown. The hotel was clean, modern, and provided the peace we needed after busy days.

Austin was vibrant and busy. We visited the Texas Capitol, passed by the Austin FC stadium, and walked around the downtown area. However, the heat made daytime walks harder, especially with kids.

Meanwhile, that evening, my husband and I decided to go out on our own to explore downtown without the little ones. For example, walking past the lively bars and venues gave us a glimpse of the local music scene. In addition, we noticed a strong, unmistakable scent in the air—something very “relaxed,” let’s say, similar to the vibe in Amsterdam!

After returning home, we found out that Benson Boone, an artist I love, had been performing at a local festival that same weekend. We had no idea! Next time, I’ll check Austin’s event schedule beforehand.

Family Road Trip Stop 2: Discovering San Antonio’s River Walk

San Antonio was the highlight of our family road trip. I had watched so many beautiful travel videos about it, and it looked magical—especially the River Walk. Meanwhile, it’s a great walking city when the weather cooperates.

We stayed at Embassy Suites Riverwalk-Downtown, which was perfect for our family. For example, we had direct access to the River Walk from the hotel, and the suite came with breakfast and lots of space for the four of us. In addition, the extra kitchenette helped with snacks and water refills.

The River Walk felt like a dream. Colorful, winding paths full of restaurants, shops, and little surprises. However, we got lost more than once—but in a fun, Venice-like way.

Family Adventures Along the River

Walking around was a big part of the experience, however, with the Texas heat, it wasn’t always easy for the kids. For example, we decided to try the Rainforest Café for lunch—a jungle-themed restaurant that kept them entertained. Meanwhile, it’s a must to book ahead, because it gets very crowded.

The highlight for the kids was definitely the River Walk boat tour. It was about $14 per adult and $8 per child and lasted 35 minutes. In addition, it gave everyone a chance to cool off and take in the sights while seated.

We also did a little shopping, picking up handmade souvenirs from the local artisan shops lining the river.

Memories, Reflections, and What’s Next

One of the most special parts of the trip was simply walking along the river as a family, discovering new corners and soaking in the calm atmosphere. It reminded us of how much there is to enjoy in slowing down and just being together.

Meanwhile, we realized something important: our kids are at a phase where long walks aren’t fun for them. The little one especially got tired and cranky at times. So for some parts of future trips, it might be best to let them rest at the hotel while we explore a bit on our own.

Family Road Trip Tips: Budget, Comfort, and Fun

Even on a family road trip, it’s possible to enjoy great experiences on a budget. We kept our meals simple most days, using the hotel breakfast and opting for fast food or snacks when necessary. Meanwhile, we splurged a bit for the themed lunch.

Here’s what helped us stay comfortable:

  • Light, breathable clothing
  • Open sandals
  • Sunscreen and hats
  • A relaxed schedule with indoor breaks

In addition, we recommend reserving restaurants in advance—especially those located on the River Walk. Otherwise, you might end up waiting or giving up altogether.

What We Learned From This Family Road Trip

This family road trip taught us a lot—not just about Texas, but about ourselves. For example, we realized that our kids aren’t fans of long walks under the sun, and that’s okay. Sometimes, letting them rest in the hotel while we explore as a couple is the best plan.

Meanwhile, we found that we love road tripping together. Even short trips like this build memories and moments we’ll talk about for years.

In addition, I’d love to return with more time—to enjoy live music in Austin, sip a cocktail by the canal in San Antonio, and maybe even try a festival the next time around.

Final Thoughts

We took many photos, but the feeling of the trip is hard to capture in just an image. If I had to describe it in one sentence, it would be:

“A short family road trip with a lasting impact—a journey full of joy, surprises, and connection.”
